Welcome!

It is a joy to share my passion for ceramics and the firing process with you. My journey with ceramics spans almost two decades and never ceases to fascinate, challenge and inspire me. I make small batches of wheel thrown work, and one of a kind pieces, at my home studio in rural Grass Valley, California. Everything is fired at high temperature either in my propane kiln, or in Japanese style wood burning kilns, and is dishwasher and microwave safe. I participate in various Art Fairs throughout northern California throughout the year, and truly enjoy the personal interaction with my customers. I am also open to commissions, if we share a vision for a project. Please enjoy and feel free to contact me with any questions here or on IG @saskiaceramics. Thank you!

What is "wood firing"?

Firing a Japanese style wood burning kiln ("Anagama" or "Noborigama") is a labor of love requiring a team of dedicated, hard working people. The kilns are usually very large and hold thousands of pieces that are fired round the clock for days on end. Participants prepare by chopping and stacking cords of wood, carefully loading the kiln, and then taking turns stoking the kiln round the clock for anywhere between three days and a week, depending on the design of the kiln. The pieces are left unglazed and during the firing the ash flying about inside the kiln, circles and lands on them, solidifying into a natural glaze once the kiln is cooling. Temperatures of at least 1285 degrees celsius (2345 farenheit) are reached, and the kilns require days to cool down until they can be opened. The results are one of a kind pieces that that tell the story of the path of the fire and ash over time. Wood fired pieces are a testament to this ancient firing process, which is nothing short of magical.

Sales events.

Every year I participate in art fairs in Lake Tahoe, Mammoth Lakes, Nevada City, Humboldt county, and the Bay area. In the Winter there are often various pop ups in the Nevada county area. Please send me an email or check my Instagram page to find out about my upcoming events.

NEXT ART FAIR: Fellowship of Craft (formerly the Craneway Art Fair), November30th & December 1st, Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts, Oakland, California.

Workshops

I host small workshops at my home studio in Grass Valley once or twice a year (Spring and Fall). They usually cover specific topics, involve either wheel throwing or handbuilding, and explore different firing techniques.

Next workshop date: October 26th, 2024.

Please send me an email or contact me via instagram if you are interested in participating.
